I've got blisters on my fingers.

There are two novels that can change a bookish fourteen-year old’s life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other involves orcs.

It probably isn’t fair of me to reblog this since I haven’t read Atlas Shrugged. But I have read The Fountainhead, Anthem and We the Living. The only one I recommend is We the Living, and that’s because Ayn Rand accidentally wrote a book about corruption instead of collectivism.

People complain about her heroes being unbelievable, but honestly the real problem are her villains. They make less sense than Sarah Palin claiming she respects constitutional rights.
